We now make a High Heat RoastingStick horseshoe stand for those of you that like to hold your stick with just a little assistance every now and then. This cradle stand can be placed much closer in the fire pit than our adjustable stand model. Coated with a High Heat resistant paint, they come in fun colors, red, blue, green or black, and can stay outdoors as a permanent fire pit feature.

I was able to carve out a couple of hours of my vacation time to make this grill stand out of junk that would have ended up in a recycling pile. Now it has a whole new purpose for years to come!

The RoastingStick-Mate is perfect for roasting your bratwurst over an open flame. There’s no taste quite like it when cooked this way. However, I have heard that giving the brats a beer bath after roasting can increase the flavor impact of your campfire roasted bratwurst. Below is a collection of beer and brat combinations suggested with variations on cooking. Some suggest boiling before roasting, and others strongly recommend roasting and then the boil to preserve flavor. Whichever method you choose, a good cast iron skillet, roasting stick, and the RoastingStick-Mate are all you need to cook these recipes up over an…

Listening to a bluegrass jam this morning captured at Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, I began to wonder about the origins of campfire music and camp songs. In terms of the American History of camp songs, I found an interesting article on the American Camp Association website. However, the article seems to merely scratch the surface of the history of humans singing around a fire. For one thing, in addition to the folk songs and gospel tunes mentioned in the article, on any given night in Asheville there is certain to be some folks picking Old Time and Bluegrass music on…

Camping Creates Healthier Kids

In reading through some of the campfire information on the US Forest Services website, this video seemed important enough to share here: Coming from a generation that didn’t grow up with screens, it is hard to image not wanting to go outside to play. Now it seems we have a generation that would rather sit and play computer games than run around in the woods. As parents and grandparents it is our responsibility to limit screen time and take the time to be hands on with our kids exploring the outside world. It seems there are more reasons to…

All Roasting Sticks are Not Created Equal

When deciding on a roasting stick after setting up your tent and fire pit there are a couple factors to consider. Namely, what are you planning to roast and what kind of camper are you? First off, what are you planning to cook over an open fire? If it’s marshmallows or shish kabobs then any skewer, telescoping fork, or light weight stick will work. The telescoping forks are very light weight and compact to travel with whether you are hiking to your campsite or packing a car, RV, or trailer to drive to your campsite. Wooden skewers may only have one…

Here’s a little video I made about my pioneer cow chip fire starter. It works great in all kinds of weather. What is your favorite fire starting method?

When looking for a way to educate kids about campfire safety I can’t help think of Smokey Bear and the old PSA’s that ran on TV when I was a kid. According to the Smokey Bear website the image of Smokey Bear 1944 Smokey Bear appeared in PSA’s as early as 1944 encouraging kids and adults both to be careful with matches and properly dowse their campfires. Then in 1950 a real bear cub was rescued from a forest fire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico and became the living version of Smokey Bear. Smokey has…

I recently discovered a whole new world of accommodations that have sprung up in the area. I heard about the debate about AirBnB short term rentals of “Accessory Dwelling Units” in the city limits (See Citizen-Times article), but does that include a yurt, tent or dome offered as what is being called a “Glamping” (glamorous + camping) unit? Glamping seems to be the new term for a style of camping that makes you think of wealth and luxury while maintaining a price comparable or less than local hotel rates. Glamping is not entirely new. BAROQUE TENT 17TH…
